Plop Went the Hat

The moon was round. The barn was warm. A duck found a hat in the hay. She set it on her fluffy head — and PLOP! it slid away.
Plop went the hat. Plop, plop, plop.
It bounced off the nose of the big pink pig. The pig went snort, snort, snort! The hat hopped up. The hat hopped down. Plop, plop, plop.
It landed on the woolly sheep, right on her curly head. She gave a wiggle. She gave a hop. FWOOMP went the hat instead.
Plop went the hat. Plop, plop, plop.
It flopped on the cow's warm velvet ear. The cow gave a happy moo. She swung her head. She gave a flap. WHOOSH! Off the hat flew.
"Mine," said the duck. "My hat. My hat." And down, down, down it came — right on the duck, from beak to toes, a blanket all the same.
Plop went the hat. The hat stayed put.
The pig lay down. The sheep lay down. The cow lay down in the hay. The barn was warm. The barn was dim. The moon was far away.
Plop, said the hat, one last soft plop, and under it the duck was warm, and all the hay was still.
